Hot Water Systems

Alternative water heating systems are easily one of the most cost-effective ways of conserving energy, and have a relatively short payback period, with reports of 80% savings or more on energy bills.

There are two distinct types of hot water systems:

Passive System

No moving parts and use existing water pressure to operate. They are very simple systems and basically fool-proof. They work best when the owners can schedule most of their hot water use once the water has had sufficient time to be heated by the sun.

Active System

Use pumps to move fluid through the collectors as the sun shines on the panel. Two different types of systems are available. Both systems use the same types of flat-plat collectors with typical roof mounting. Components are then installed next to the original water heater.
Electric water heaters can be used in conjunction with both systems without having to add an additional holding tank, although we recommend adding additional water storage to maximize performance. To allow the system to work properly, gas water heaters must have an additional 80 to 120 gallon tank added to the system.

Drain back system

Uses distilled water pumped through the collectors when the system is receiving sunlight. Water drains back into the holding tank during times of little to no sunlight. This is a very popular system since the pump will stop and the liquid will drain into holding tank during power outages, reducing the possibility of water freezing in the collectors.

Closed loop system

Antifreeze is added to the water in the solar system to prevent the water from freezing in the collector. This fluid is pumped through a heat exchanger, which protects the potable water from contamination.
