Photovoltaics

Photovoltaic panels (PV arrays) are flat plate, encapsulated collectors with very thin silicon wafers that are positive on one side and negative on the other side. They can be mounted on the roof or on the ground. When light strikes the panel, electricity is produced. All panels must have direct sunlight, with no shading.

Typical installations start at 500 watts with larger arrays exceeding 4,000 watts. PV arrays all produce DC power. Stand-alone systems (systems not tying into PNM electric grid) store their DC power in deep cycle batteries, using an inverter to switch it over to AC power.

When a system is grid-tied into the PNM electric grid, no deep storage batteries are needed. An inverter simply switches the DC power to AC power and the electricity is pushed into the grid.

Dual use systems use battery backup but can also tie into the PNM grid.

The solid-state inverters now available produce cleaner, more stable electricity than you get over the power lines. Power line electricity can fluctuate quite dramatically, requiring power strips on computers and other electronic equipment to even out the flow. The power produced by an inverter is stable.

When grid-tied, the power line is used as the battery. Excess power is passed to the grid, with no storage needed. By 2015, PNM is mandated to produce 15% of their electricity using alternative energy sources. A separate electric meter is used to record all power produced by the system. PNM is currently paying 13 cents per kWh produced. Consumers pay approximately 9.5 cents per kWhs used, netting a producer 3.5 cents per kWh provided to PNM.

System pricing is dependent upon the unique needs of the customer,
